Home Again
December 22, 2000

I find the overwhelming joy and relief we feel upon returning to our land-house after a short, week-long sojurn into the northern southern states, rather disconcerting. We are preparing to throw lines ashore and sail away to planet Ocean in only six months now. How can we be such home bodies?

What will we do when after our second day at sea we decide we really miss our garden gnome(1), or our dish washer, or daily showers, or our double oven, or our front porch that leads to a nice sidewalk surrounded by grass and not... water. It's everywhere on a boat, in a boat. Are we going to leave one Monday six months hence only to return the following Thursday? Will we spend Friday at the Home Mart purchasing every concrete block in stock in order to prop the boat up in some vacant lot just to call it home? What is home?

Hopefully we'll figure this out in the next six months sinc I've already got a buyer for the lawn mower and I just gave the dish washer to our neighbor.

(1)no, we don't currently own a garden gnome, but if you have one that would like to go ocean-trotting, please send it our way.
