I'll not like it
December 15, 2000

We don't watch a lot of television. In fact, the only time we stare into the evil eye is to watch a DVD or perhaps a movie on cable. We might go out to a movie twice a month, and only then if there's not something more interesting to do, like watch our cat sleep. The strange thing, however, is that I hate most of the movies we plan to see. This is an astounding fact that I find nearly impossible to explain. The movies we actually go out of the way to view - the ones which in order to see we must leave our children with strangers (if you knew my wife's sisters you'd understand) - the ones which in order to see we must brave the bizarre underworld of the movie theater concession stand - what we find is that these movies we see in the theatre after paying $7.50 a ticket and $10.00 on popcorn and drinks - we hate them.

But the really odd thing is that the movies I'm absolutely certain I won't like - those that I'm sure will make me break out in hives - when I finally see them because they're the $1.00 rental at Blocksmasher video - I love 'em.

I just watched "Runaway Bride" with Julia Roberts and Richard Gere and I thought it was fantastic. I only watched it because I was procrastinating writing this daily article and I enjoy making fun of Richard Gere. When that movie first came out in the theaters you would have had to drug me with morphene and roll me into the theater on a stretcher to see it. And it was great!

What does this mean? I have no idea, but I think it deserves further study. As a bonus, it gave me a great subject for today's article.
